Onboarding: The process of integrating a new employee into a new company, learning their clientele, product and services the business provide.
When you onboard a new employee, you’re potentially adding someone to the company who’ll be an excellent addition for your work team. Of course, onboarding your new hire doesn’t end when all the paper work is completed.
When you welcome a new addition to the team, you’re showing the newbie all the tools he or she will be using during their employment within the company.
They’re just learning:
- Their new work environment
- Understanding clientele
- Learning new workflow type
- The tools they’ll be using
- Computer programs
- People they’ll be working with
But how do you properly get your employee started for success in the company? Well, we can tell you in 3 easy steps!

Step #1: Don’t Rush The Newbie
Your company just hired several new employees and you’re ready to have them start right away.
Hold your horses.
Let them breath: You can’t rush someone and expect them to do their job perfectly when they just got there. Give them some time so they can take the day to take all the information they just learned in.
Teach as a group: The best way to tackle this is to get all your newbies together and teach them as a group. You’ll explain less compared to explaining to each individual hire. It’s less draining compared to explaining the same thing over and over again.
Introductions: Since everything is new, make sure to take your time when introducing workers of the company to the new hire. Since this person will be meeting a whole lot of different people on their first day, it can become over whelming remembering names and fully understanding what the job entails for the rest of the team.
- Provide pen & paper if needed
- Introduce each person, to the new hire. Have them personally introduce themselves to ensure a memorable first impression.
- When introducing the newbie, have them meet the manager & other employees at the desk / or area they work from. This will give them the better opportunity to remember who they’re meeting and where they could find them.
Meeting a whole bunch of people in one day can be overwhelming. Remember, when introducing a new employee, it’s not a race.
Your success starts first thing in the morning!

Step #2: Providing Resources
Organize and put together some resources for your new employee to explore and do some research on their own time.
Resources you could provide:
- Annual Reports
- The Company’s Website
- Marketing Tools they’ll be able to refer to
- Sales of particular products or services
- Old files, reports & presentations
Just be aware not to provide too much information all at once. Could be overwhelming for someone who just started working with you.
Another excellent resource is you: If you want the newbie to strive for greatness in the company expect questions, sometimes a whole lot of them. Don’t be annoyed by questions, the fact that the new employee asks a million questions is because they want to put care into their work and want to be sure they do it correctly. That’s a rare find, and defiantly worth the investment of time to explain to them.
When you provide an open library of information to your new employee, it gives them an excellent opportunity to research the job position and company on their free time. You want to give them the tools so they can do the research themselves.
Step #3: Set-up The Tools
There are tools you need to set-up when onboarding your new employee. E-mail, register login, computer passwords, alarm code, office supplies (like pen, paper, paperclips, scissors, highlighters, staples, filing cabinet, etc. etc.).
- Business Email
- Passwords to computers, registers, or security systems (for opening and closing, alarms).
- Depending on who you’re hiring for what position, a key to the company’s building
- Where they can park their car
- How to work the keurig machine in the break room
- Where they can store their paper-work, filing cabinets, etc. etc.
- A list of different departments (usually of an office setting / environment)

Remember when setting up tools for your employee, the time you’re investing to do so will save you hours of time in the future. You’re for sure saving time for the newbie as well, they wont waste their time setting up everything and possibly doing it incorrectly.
Properly onboarding your new staff reduces the chance of mistakes. However, expect mistakes to happen when bringing onboard new people into your company. They are only human after all. Proper onboarding provides a valuable experience for the newbie and gets them started a whole lot faster!
Feedback is always welcome: Feel more than welcome to ask for feedback on the onboarding experience and get an outsider point of view to see how it all went from another person. Maybe you’ll want to change the way you do things for onboarding the next set of new employees.
